Special Halloween Edition with Louise Clark!

Hi there! My name is Louise Clark, your judge this week. I am an aspiring author, full-time catering administrative assistant, wife of fifteen years, and mother of two - one high school freshman and one fifth grader. Translation: I'm very, very busy!

Halloween is my favorite time of year! I love the spooky atmosphere, the cooler temperatures, the changing of the leaves, and so much more!

This time around, the prompt will be up for a full four days! You have until midnight Halloween night to flash me! The word limit is still 300, must be over 100. Question is, will you trick me or treat me? ;)

  1. We can take over the world with our bows and arrows and short little dresses.
We are masters of our fate and queens of our universe.
Nothing can stop us, and no one for that matter.
We’ll always be the best thing you’ve ever seen.
    We are women—
Mistresses of time and benders of reality,
Forgetters of nothing and lovers of fun.
For us, there is no wrong,
Only the right we create in our minds.
    They’ll fall at our feet,
Throw themselves over the puddles so we don’t have to jump,
    But we’ll still soar above
With fairy wings or on broomsticks,
    However it may be,
    We will dominate this place.

  2. Halloween was approaching and I was running out of time. I needed a costume, but my mother was forcing me to spend time with my grandmother. If I didn’t get the perfect Halloween costume it would be like social suicide. My mother could care less.

My grandmother greeted me with a warm smile and a funny smelling box as soon as I walked through the door.

“Edie, it’s so nice to see you.” Her blue hair was as high as ever and of course she smelled like her normal fragrance, sugar cookies.

“Nice to see you too.” I mumbled and she motioned for me to open the box.

“I know hanging out with your old Gran isn’t the swellest thing to do, but I think I may have something that can solve your Halloween issues.”

I tried not to cringe at her use of the word swellest. She thought she was hip.

I tossed off the top and was met with flowing black fabric and an old, worn photo. There were four women smiling back at me, all wearing Halloween costumes. I noticed my grandmother instantly and realized how true it was when my family would say we could have been twins.

She was wearing a tight black witches costume and was sporting a smile.

    She looked amazing.

“You can wear it if you want. I know it’s not new, but I figured no one would have your costume. Plus it shows a lot of leg. I met your Grandfather the night I wore that outfit. It was the leg.”

I looked up at her with a smile.

“Tell me about it Grandma, and who are these women.”

She smiled as she told me stores and I realized spending time with her was more important than worrying about my popularity.

  3. ~~~~~~~~~

I look at my old photo. By god, I was beautiful then, and so were my girlfriends. Those of us who are still here now are old crones.

I still remember the feeling of empowerment that I got when I slipped on that small, tight, black dress. As if I could slip into another person just as easily, a person just as black and just as slippery.

I did. The broom took me to places I still won’t talk to my grandchildren about. Made me feel things that I have never forgotten. A Holy Evening, indeed.

I never did find that mojo again, though, life became work, and men, and children, and homes, and men, and divorces, and all those other things that take away your power. That eat away at the very essence of your soul.

But that one night, in a life long, long ago, I was the queen of my whole world, and nobody could touch me.

Much like today, when I have been stripped of all the cute and sexy—all that is left now is wild woman.

    Sacred.

I am old. But not done. Not by a long shot.

Samhain, you old, evil sod of a holy night, I am coming to get you tonight.

And I am embracing my crone-hood.

    Tremble, earth.

  4. My closest friends would arrive shortly, and I could hardly keep my excitement in check. It was Halloween. All Hallowed's Eve. A night for costume and fun.

We were a tight-knit group. Friends since primary school, and we'd trick-or-treated as children for as many years. Tonight was different. We were now college students, and had been invited to attend our first adult party.

As I added the finishing touches to my costume, I couldn't help but smile in the small dorm room wall mirror. With some frugal consignment purchases, I was pleased with the results. I stepped away from the mirror, and twirled about.

Ruby red lips. Patent leather heels. Lots of leg. Sexy.

I smiled, and winked at my reflection. The guys at the fraternity hall wouldn't know what hit them.
